Destinations: Lake Nakuru National Park, Hell's Gate National Park, Lake Naivasha, Mount Longonot, Masai Mara National Reserve
Highlights: Cycling in Hell's Gate, trekking dormant volcano, spotting endanged species, boatride, seeing wild animals on horseback.

Day 1: Nairobi – Nakuru

Depart from Nairobi heading north stopping for spectacular views over the Great Rift Valley. On the way you will see Mt Longonot, Lake Naivasha, road-side markets, and Lake Elementiata. At Lake Nakuru National Park you will enjoy lunch and a full afternoon game drive. Pass through acacia forest, open plains, stop for clifftop views, and even drive down to the lake shore.

Nakuru is famous for blue lake and pink rim, being home to thousands of flamingo that wade in the shallows of the lake. Once home to a third of the world’s flamingo population, numbers do fluctuate depending on water levels. The park is also renowned for the opportunity to spot some of Kenya’s rarest animals - the black rhino, white rhino, leopard and Rothchild’s giraffe.

Day 3: Lake Naivasha – Sanctuary Farm – Lake Olodian – Lake Naivasha

Depart after breakfast for Sanctuary Farm, where you will meet your horse-riding guides who will give you a safety briefing and get you kitted-up ready to mount your horse. On horseback, you will explore Sanctuary Farm and enjoy riding amongst the wild game including giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala and gazelle. There are no predators in the areas, and because the horses and wildlife live together, you can have close wildlife encounters while riding. This horse-riding safari is suitable for experienced riders or those with minimal or no riding experience. The guides and horses are well trained, and you will receive a brief training before your safari on the basics of controlling your horse. Basically, you will only go at a pace that you feel comfortable. Enjoy lunch before heading along to Lake Olodian for an hour-long boat ride where you can view flamingos, hippo, African Fisheagle and other birdlife. Return to accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Lake Naivasha – Mt Longonot – Maji Moto

Rise early, and depart the Naivasha region for Mt Longonot. At the main gate of the National Park you begin the hike up the dormant volcano, rising over 630 metres to the rim of the crater at 2776 metres above sea level. The walk is very steep and craggy in parts and a trek encircling the rim and back to the gate is around nine kilometres. From the rim, there are spectacular views into the crater as well as the surrounding landscape taking in the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha, open plains, towns and small villages. The crater floor is carpeted by a forest of trees which is home to all sorts of wildlife including zebra, giraffe, buffalo and hartebeest.

From Mt Longonot, head west across the floor of the Rift Valley to the Maasai village of Maji Moto. Here you will be met by your Maasai hosts and check into your traditional Maasai manyatta (tourist standard). Dinner and overnight at the cultural village.

Day 6: Masai Mara

Enjoy a full day game viewing with picnic lunch on the Mara River over-looking the hippo pools and across to the Serengeti. Return to accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Kenya’s most popular reserve, the Masai Mara covers 1,510 sqkm and is an extension of the Serengeti eco system. Although animal populations are good year round, the spectacular migration of thousands of wildebeest and zebra during the months of July to October is what many come to see. Resident large animals are varied, plentiful and easy to see, with around 100 species recorded including the ‘big five’ - elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and rhino - as well as giraffe, hippo, cheetah, hyena, zebra and numerous species of antelope. The reserve is also rich in birdlife with over 450 species seen in recent times, including many spectacular birds of prey.
