Route
Up: Sirimon
Down: Chogoria

Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi - Old Moses Hut
Depart Nairobi heading north to the fertile highlands, past farms and pineapple plantations to Nanyuki. After lunch we take a short drive, around 15km, to the starting point at Sirimon gate. From here we commence our assent on foot towards the first nights camp - Old Moses hut (3300m). The first part of the trek to Old Moses huts is about 3-4 hours walk on a dirt road, trekking through forested areas and open hillside - you may be lucky enough to see elephants, rhino, baboons, monkeys, buffalo, zebra and gazelle. Upon reaching Old Moses you will have time to relax or just take in the breath-taking scenery. Dinner and overnight in dorm-style huts.

Day 2: Old Moses Hut (acclimatisation day)
Because you are already at 3300m, today is an acclimatisation day. This will help ensure you can reach the summit successfully and also give you time to enjoy the scenery of Mt Kenya. During your morning trek, you will ascend only slightly then return for lunch. The afternoon is free for you to explore a little on your own or maybe relax reading a book, play cards, or just rest. Dinner and overnight in dorm-style huts.

Day 3: Old Moses Hut - Shiptons Camp
After breakfast you depart Old Moses for Shiptons Camp. On route you will pass through magnificent valleys and see the prehistoric looking plant called the ostrich feather lobelia, and may even see the elephant’s smallest and closest relative, the rock hyrax. You will have lunch on the way, and views of Mt Kenya’s peaks. After about 6-8 hours trekking you will reach Shiptons Camp, at 4200m, here you will relax and take in the awesome views of the impressive mountain. Dinner and overnight in dorm-style huts.

Day 4: Shiptons Camp - acclimatisation day
Wake for breakfast then depart for an acclimatisation day trek. How much trekking you do on this day depends on how you feel. It is possible to do the summit circuit, where you will view some of the superb cliffs and valleys - this will give you time to take in the sheer size of the mountain. Or if you want a shorter trek, and be able to relax in the afternoon before the summit. There are many beautiful walks that can be done from this camp. Return to Shiptons for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Shiptons Camp - Point Lenana - Bandas Hut
You will start very early this morning, around 2am, to ensure that you reach the summit (Point Lenana, 4985m) for spectacular sunrise views. There will be no cooked breakfast, only a cup of tea or coffee and some biscuits. You will then depart for the summit, taking around four hours. On a clear morning there are awesome views of Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru. We spend around half an hour at the summit and then begin the descent to Mintos Hut for breakfast. From Mintos Hut we descend further down the Chogoria route to Bandas Hut where you can get a welcome hot shower, dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Bandas Hut - Chogoria - Nairobi
After breakfast we descend further down Chogoria route, through its impressive deep gorges and lush forests. And if you are quiet you may happen upon some wildlife including elephants and buffalo. When we reach Chogoria town we have a lunch break before returning to Nairobi by around 5pm.

Cautions
Altitude sickness is a real danger for any climber. If you feel sick or develop a headache during any part of the trek, inform your guide immediately. And remember, for your safety you may have to descend even if you seem not far from the summit.

Also take good care against the sun. Your skin's sensitivity at altitude is greatly increased, particularly if you are taking some antimalarial tablets.

A summit trek may not be suitable for children under 10, but ultimately this is at the discretion of the parents and the guide.
