Perhaps like no other location, the name Zanzibar evokes thoughts of mystique and historical adventure.

Although becoming more commercialised, Zanzibar still retains much of its old world charm. The people, architecture, villages and Swahili cuisine all remain heavily rooted in their Arabic past.

The narrow winding streets and alleys are full of wonderful things to discover - handicrafts, old carved doors, children playing.

Although it can these days be diffiuclt to have a stay in Stone Town without street touts offering cashew nuts, CDs, t-shirts, boat trips, etc.

Zanzibar is also renowned for its fabulous beaches.

Views of palm-fringed sands, hand-sewn sails aboard traditional wooden fishing dhows, ocean reefs housing a myriad of sea-dwelling wonders.

Paje
This pristine long stretch of beautiful white sand with the aqua Indian Ocean lapping at its shores is a great place to enjoy the Swahilli sun. There is a large choice of hotels and bungalows which are from the cheap to mid-range.

Bwejuu
Just north of Paje, Bwejuu enjoys the same white sand and aqua ocean views.

Jambiani

Tips

Departure tax - depending on the airline you are flying with when you are departing Zanzibar you might have to pay a $30 departure tax. This is payable in US$ cash.

Airport - it is being renovated, however presently there is no ATM

Money - there are only ATM machines in Stone Town. Make sure you carry enough money before you depart for your beach location. Most hotels need to be paid in US$ and some may accept Euros. Meals, drinks etc can normally be paid in Tanzanian Shillings.
