Mt Elgon About 400km North West of Nairobi on the border between Kenya and Uganda is Mt Elgon, this extinct volcano is the second highest mountain in Kenya at 4307m, the area on the Kenyan side covers 169sq km. The highest peak on Mt Elgon is on the Ugandan The main reason for people coming here is to see the elephants, the elephants come here to extract the salts from the lava tube caves, and they arrive in droves on dusk to enter the caves using their tusks to break chunks from the walls. Kitum is the largest cave favoured by the elephants, around 180m in length and about 60m wide. There are three other caves one called makingeni which is used by buffalo, and all can be explored as long as you have a powerful torch. The trek itself can be cut short if you drive to Austrian hut then walk for about four to five hours to the summit of Koitoboss 4187m. If you wish to walk most of the way allow 5 days return. Not including travel time from Nairobi. |
