This small but thickly forested park is well worth a couple of days relaxing after the road from hell heading north from Nairobi. The park covers an area of 1500 km2 and consists of a forested mountain that rises like an oasis in the middle of the desert wilderness and is the only source of permanent surface water in the area. Because the area is so dense with trees and shrubs you won’t see much if you just drive around, it’s best to stop and wait in quiet for animals to come to you. The whole area is like the moons surface due to the volcanic activity and walking is possible around the craters. As well not far away is the singing wells, renowned because the tribe’s people dig well’s some up to 20m deep, for their livestock.

In groups they will get down various depths to pass up buckets of water to put into troughs for the animals and whilst doing this they sing together. It is a wonder sight and sound and must not be missed when coming up here.
