Lake Baringo lies about 20km north of Lake Bogoria and is simply a bird-watcher's paradise. Its beauty is astounding with the surrounding hills dominating the lake views as well as the large Ol Kokwe Island in the middle of the lake.

It is a freshwater lake but has had problems over the years like drought, over-fishing and soil erosion, all taking its toll on the local industry. These days most of the area depends on tourism. Bird watching is one of the main reasons people visit here with over 450 different bird species recorded. There is a resident ornithologist at Lake Baringo Club for those who want that extra bit of information.

Lazy days at the lake can be broken with bird walks or a boat trip on the lake. This is a great way to view hippos and crocodiles as well as many birds such as fish eagles, cormorants, heron, ducks, geese, stork and pelican. You can also visit one of the lake's islands. If going on a boat trip, make sure the boat and guide are provided by a reputable company, like one of the camps or lodges, and ensure life vests are provided.

There are a number of places to stay along the lake and this can be a great place to relax for some days and soak up the peaceful ambience and enjoy the birdlife - even if you are not a birdwatcher.
