Amboseli National Park

Located on the Kenya Tanzania border, Amboseli National Park has the spectacular Mt Kilimanjaro looming in the background, and is Kenya's second most visited park after the Masai Mara. It is famous for having some of Africa's largest elephant families which survive well into their seventies, due to wetland areas which allow them to eat soft plants after they have lost their last set of teeth.

The park covers around 392 sq km and is about 160km south of Nairobi (around a five hour drive). It is located in a semi-arid landscape and is generally quite hot and dry, and can be very dusty in the dry months.

The National Park embodies five main wildlife habitats - open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush, swamps and marshland. Lake Amboseli covers much of the park although is dry most of the year and floods during years of heavy rainfall.

The park has suffered extensive erosion and plant decline from destructive elephants, off-road tourist vehicles and overgrazing by Masai cattle. But the beautiful acacia woodlands, marshland and swamps break up the landscape and photography can be spectacular with the snow-capped Kilimanjaro providing an impressive backdrop, (although she is best see early morning before being shrouded in cloud).  

The amount of animals here is less than the Masai Mara but due to the lack of dense bush you have a better chance of spotting the larger species.   You can expect to see lion, elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, warthog, jackal, masai giraffe, baboon, bushbuck, hyena, zebra, baboon, vervet monkeys, dik dik, gazelle and impala.
