Elsemere Elsemere is a haven for nature lovers and is set in spectacular gardens and acacia forest overlooking Lake Naivasha. Formerly the home of the late Joy and George Adamson, who together received international fame for their pioneering conservation work and the relationship they developed with the lioness Else - which led to Joy writing the best-selling book Born Free, which was sebsequently made into a film. The main house is a lovely remnant of Kenya's colonial past and still contains many of Joy and George's personal effects, including Joy's paintings plus photos and artefacts from their conservation work. There is also a small museum and gift shop which gives more history on the famous couple. Elsemere is a birdwatchers' paradise with over 200 species found in the extensive gardens. Early morning are a special time when the African Fish Eagle heralds the dwn with its memorable cry and the morning chorus pof bird song continues hrough the day. Elsemere is also popular for its troop of black and white colobus monkeys which visit regularly - particularly around lunch time! And an overnight stay means you might be lucky enough to see hippos grazing on the lawn outside your room. The guest accommodation is in cottages set around the main house, scattered throughout the garden, all with lake views. The rooms are comfortable, African style and have their own ensuite. Meals are served either in the house or in the garden overlooking the lake - and the food is brilliant! Perhaps the highlight being a traditional afternoon tea which is served under the acacias.
